Earth Run: Race Preparation and some drama

Tags: , , , ,

What happened today to me was a mix of several human emotions.I woke up knowing that I’ll be able to test one of the best shoes Nike  has ever produced in the market, the Nike LunarGlide+. Tried it for 2 kilometers around oval track and it feels so good, bouncy and works well with my shins. Probably one of those days wherein you finally figured out the right partner for your feet. I was so happy about it until an accident happens…

Later lunch time
Family decided to go to Alabang Town Center and in the Molino road, a motor speeding on my right side collide near the front part of my car. I was so worried I thought I killed both passengers but good thing nothing serious happened. Both passengers were wearing helmets (thick ones) so I know their heads are OK, except the driver whose collar bone was fractured. He did undergo a 1 hour operation to put a metal and connect the collar bone and he’s in the recovery area now. He can go home on Monday morning according to the ortho. I was so worried over the expense but thank God it wasn’t that much. I was expecting more than a hundred thousand hospital bill but the doctor gave me an idea that I might just shell out half of that (i will remember ‘MIGHT’). Anyway, my mind now is somewhat still shaky, am hoping now things will work OK on the patient’s end.

After talking with doctor about the condition, he told me I was lucky because the accident wasn’t that big as compared to other operations he undergo. Usually motor accidents involve spinal cord or brain injuries. What happend to the driver was for him “minimal’. On my way home while driving my car, I was thankful to God because even though things screwed up, I know He still guided us along the way. The doctor is good, patient and relatives are cooperative and we settle the case well.

So there you go, happines, worry and thankfullness. These are the emotions I went through this day and tomorrow race day, I have no idea what will be its implication on my run. With all these things that happened today, I thought that I should just ignore the mental and physical pain that I might face for tomorrow’s race. Enjoy the race and hopefully, the release of endorphins will somewhat remove the anxiety I’m still feeling now. And so, to remind my self of this, I put a statement on my bib:

Must Love Pain - Physically and Mentally
Must Love Pain - Physically and Mentally

Hell yeah, I must love pain!

Race Gear
Race Gear

To help my mind get into “race zone” I thought of preparing my race gear tonight unlike before where I prepare my stuffs on the race day itself! Hehehehe! For the first time, I shall try Nike Compression shirt with my takbo.ph over, I shall wear Nike shorts, dri fit socks and will try to break in Nike LunarGlide+ on the race day. As the shoes are pretty new and with only 2km on it, I’m just hopeful it will not cause any blisters. Oh yeah, I already applied petroleum jelly on my toes, underarms and thighs.

For hydration, I shall fill up my hydration belt with Gatorade. I will consume 1 pack of sports beans 30minutes before the race and will drink the orange 100 Plus liquid to consume it. The other packet I will consume 5beans  on the 4th km and the other half on the 13th km. During the race, I will carry the crystal 100 Plus. You may think I’m over hydrated but with no idea how the race organizer will be true to their “water stations every 2 kilometer” promise as stated in their race packet, I’m taking extra measures to ensure I don’t end up dehydrated just like what happened on my last race, the dreaded 42k Botak Paa-Tibayan race.

As for my race strategies, here’s what’s gonna happen:
1-3 km: run comfortably, “feel the race”, warm-up stage
4-7 km: start running like a maniac from hell
8-12 km: recovery stage, run a little harder than the first 1-3km
13-16km: run again like a maniac from hell

Now this is my strategy, if this shall happen tomorrow is another story :)

sam, make sure you let the fizz out of your 100 plus by leaving the bottle open without the cap inside the ref overnight. otherwise it’s gona start flowing out like a fountain when you run. good luck tomorrow

Sam, to love pain is to be a masochist. I prefer to embrace pain, and see it for what is is: a distress signal or a reminder that we are momentarily broken so we can be rebuilt - stronger and wiser.

Btw, I heard you deviated from your 1-3km race plan. You do love pain, don’t you :-)

    Hi Harry,

OO nga eh, I didn’t realize that 100 plus was carbonated, only during the race day! One thing I learned today is not try anything new, I really wonder if this drink caused the stomach cramp I experienced today.

    Thanks for the reminder

    Hi Jinoe,

Thanks for the reminder. Indeed, this is a very expensive lesson for me hehehe

Man I didn’t see you! I wasn’t able to attend the post race carbo load coz I have to the hospital. Anyway, it will be available 1st week of July and will cost php 5990+. I believe the shoes is built well for those who need stability, plus its also got a great cushion.

After the race, Doc Roy was looking at my bib and happily announced “mga masochist tlaga tayo noh” hahaha.

Yeah, I started wild to get myself a free space to run. The place was too crowded when they decided 3k,5k and 16k runners to start at same time. Anyway, I didn’t feel any pain on my shins (which happens on ALL my previous races) today, must be the rocket science shoes that Nike developed :)

Whose fault is the accident ba? I think you should not shoulder the expenses if it is not ur fault. It is not fair to you if the other guy hit u. may police report ba?

SO kumusta yung race mo? Did you meet your goal?

Please explain the difference between the 3 drinks you used during the race - Gatorade and 100 Plus. Why not just Gatorade?

    Did your race strategy work?

    Hi Pastor,

My race strategy went to the garbage can. 3k,5k and 16k all started together so if I start comfy pace, it will take time for me to break away from the rest of the running groups so I went wild and went for 4:20min/km pace as told by Luis. I did positive split instead, meaning I was running the faster the first half of the race and slower but consistent the next half until I sprint for the last 300 meters.

When I went to 711 that night, there was only one Gatorade left, so I ended up with 100 Plus. I didn’t know this is carbonated unlike gatorade..i’m not sure if this causes the cramps I experienced during the race.

My strategy- I didn’t do. But for a 16k race virgin, plus no uphill trainings, finishing it by 1:40 is not bad. I got this time when I asked sir Felipe Dumpit who was encouraging me to be strong in the last 800 meters of the race (we ran together) when he saw me grimacing in pain until I decided to ran ahead faster. Then a guy challenged me to a contest in the last 100 meters and with the crowd getting involve and cheering at us, using the remaining Ninja power I have, I sprint and beat his ass by finishing the race first ahead of him. I later asked sir Dumpit what was his time (as I don’t have any device) and he said he finished it by 1:41, so I know I probably got a minute earlier than it.

    By strategy didn’t work coz I didn’t implement it*laughs*.
