How I Lost 28 lbs in 2 months by Running

Tags: , ,

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I visited shoutbox of takbo.ph group and there was a discussion on how many lbs of fat we lose by running. I was asked to post a before and after picture when I told them I lose 28lbs in 2 months so here it is. See above.

Now for those who are trying to lose weight, here’s what I did. Remember that we have different body structure, different daily routines and so there’s no guarantee you will lose the same weight like mine. Please consult your doctor just to be sure. In a nut shell, its a combination of running and diet.

1st month:
1. Do walk-run for 2 km everyday in the morning. Do this Monday to Friday. On Saturday walk-run for 4 km.

I saw an article somewhere that people who runs in the morning tends to be more consistent than those who did at night. I can vouch for that as its been effective during my first month of training.

2. Avoid coffee and fruit juices. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. If you should drink fruit juice, I’d say use REAL fresh juice, not those concentrated juice you buy on the stores.

3. Avoid fatty foods. You know them so I won’t discuss it all here. Feast on fruits and vegetables. I’d go for complex carbs like whole wheat bread. Avoid white bread at ALL times. This is bad carbs. I remember I also ate seafoods and fried chicken, avoid the skin part too.

4. Stay away from fast foods. You know the stuffs, french fries, soda, breaded chicken etc
.

5. If you have a car, park it far away from your place. If you commute, much better as walking is really a good way of losing weight.

On the 2nd month, you can slowly introduce coffee. Also instead of doing walk-run everyday, I would say do it 3 or twice during weekdays. But stay running 4km during Saturdays.

Now after two months, tell me what happened. If you lose less than 5lbs after 2 months, either you’re not doing what I did or you’re simply really eating like its the end of the world tomorrow.

In my effort to improve my running speed, I decided to take tempo runs seriously. This is only possible if I could train on a more “formal” settings and not just on any concrete/asphalt roads. As there’s no way I could train at Ultra (and for a fee) because I live in Dasma Cavite, I tried my luck if I could  use my school’s facilities- DLSU-D rubberized Oval track. See below:

Here’s another picture with students doing that star thing stunt. I heard they made the biggest star la sallians would be very proud of. Okay…

After dealing with bureaucracies inside our school, I was given a “go” signal from the vp of facilities. Woohoo! I was granted to use it M-W-F and Sat every morning until end of Sept. As I plan to use this during mornings (5am to 6:30am), I was told I might be running alone and I could ask facilities to turn the lights on during my runs if its too dark. Man I felt VIP that day!

I would use this to train myself for the marathon on October. I guess spending 7 yrs (I took Comsci and MBA here) in College is worth it after all! Hahahaha!

Hopefully, after a month, I shall revisit 10k race and have my revenge!!!

Southern Race at ATC

I wasn’t able to beat my previous PR for 10k as expected.

Here’s a guide on how NOT to beat your previous PR:

- After you hear the gun fired, ignore your own pace and observe first all the runners around you. You will start to notice they run fast and so, you try to keep up with them by sprinting a few kilometer just to ensure you stay with the leading pack
- After a kilometer or so, you start to grasp for air as you’ve been sprinting like crazy for more than a kilometer. You start to slow down and began to notice all the people you’ve overtaken minutes ago are now within your reach and are starting to overtake you.
- You began again to increase your pace, however you become too tired to increase no more and so you walk.
- Now you really notice that every seconds, people are running ahead of you.
- You began to think you’ve made a stupid start and you plan to catch up with them later in the race
- Near the final kilometers of the race, you began to execute you’re plan but the road ahead are full of uphills and you end up walking them, as you’re are not prepared for it.
- You see the FINISH sign and you sprint like crazy.
- You check you time and you realized, you didn’t beat your previous record and you feel sorry for your ass.

And luckily, you’re not alone. I’ve committed all those mistakes above *hahaha!*. After the race, a couple of takbo.ph guys were commenting I sprint like crazy like Jinoe (takbo.ph admin) and Luis. I believe they beat their own PR while my sorry ass missed my own record by almost 3 minutes! I couldn’t blame anyone else but myself. However, during this race I noticed I stopped a couple of times as I felt a stabbing pain on my lower back. I also noticed this on my GreenFields race but it was manageable so I just ignored it the entire race. However this time it was so uncomfortable and painful. I plan to see a massage therapist/chiropractor tomorrow to check it out.

To add insult to the injury, running officials released the results right after the race and thought it would be best to call me “AMMY” instead of my name “SAMMY”. See below:
ammy

I hope takbo.ph peeps who noticed this won’t start to calling me  Ammy on our next run this Sunday!

Now on the race itself, it was a challenging course because of several uphill roads as compared to Greenfields. However, I’m pissed big time when one of the water stations was not able to give us water. The other water stations still have waters on the container but with no plastic cup we (including I) ended up using our hands to drink water from the container. No kilometer markers. At the end of the race, runners were treated with coffee, however it also ran out empty I pity those souls who waited in line for an hour only to get nothing.

One thing I like about this benefit race though is that without the singlet, they were able to bring down the cost of the registration fee. I only paid 200 pesos and it could have been 150 if I registered earlier.

Bad Training Days

Tags: , ,

All my plans for preparations for ATC race tomorrow went just that, PLANS. I was planning to do a 20k LSD from Dasma to Cavite City. However, I woke up too late I did not pursue it anymore. In the afternoon, I planned to do tempo run for 6  km but ended up doing run and more walk, and worst, end up walking the rest of the remaining 4 km on my way home. Saturday morning came I plan to run, it didn’t happen again due to laziness. My alarm sounded exactly 5am, hit the snooze button, 5 minutes later it sounded, I hit the snooze button again, next time I know it was already 11:30am! I wasn’t really feeling bad, my body seems able but I guess I lack discipline. In every sports, it is discipline that seperates boys from man. This is something I really have to practice if I want to improve myself!

With my botched up plan, I’m not really looking forward to beating my 1:1:46 time I had from Greenfields 10k. However, I will still aim for it as I really don’t want to feel bad on that day.

Have you had your own bad training day?
