My First DNF

Tags:

I ran in the Globe Run For Home race yesterday. I was not suppose to join this race at all, hence the race bib I got was not registered under my name. I plan to make this my comeback race, with the real intention of beating my previous 21km PR of 1.56 from Phil Star Celebrity Run. I must admit I felt confident on this race, I did some serious speed session 1 week after my 102km BDM race.  Yes folks, one week after running an ultramarathon I was already hitting the oval at 5am doing my intervals. To make matters worst, I did some speed runs in a treadmill a few hours before this race for that MiCoach device.  Think about careless. I didn’t win, but got that signature glow in the dark yellow Adidas singlet  for free :P

I did so well in the first 3km, but after crossing that downhill road (just a few meters of it!) I felt pain in my right knee. Same spot I had issue with during my BDM race. Upon reaching the 4th km, I already knew I was out of my pace. Tried to push thru but reality bites to soon for me, I stopped just before entering Bayani road. Tried to push myself to take advantage of the downhill portion, but my knee was just not there anymore. For the first time, I was waiting for the ambulance to take me to the finish line as I don’t think I can walk/run anymore. As I could not continue anymore, I tried to make myself useful buy offering cold sponge and water to runners inside the Heritage. Others encouraged me to run/walk ahead, another one mocked me for my failure.

To cut the story short, I did not finish this race as I believe there are more important races ahead. I will be an official pacer for 15km runners targeting 1.30 on Mizuno Infinity Race on April 11 so I thought I must not risk on further aggravating my injury.

Congrats to Rio and his guys, even if I didn’t get to run the entire route, it was well manned and very organized race.

Congrats to all finishers and PR busters.

As for me, I will rest and recover. I’ll have another visit with Coach Titus very soon for a deep tissue massage session. God knows how I hate myself everytime Coach Titus touches me hehehehe. I shall return very soon.

Hey Sam, so sorry you weren’t able to finish the 21K. But you’re right, there are more important races in the future. No use risking injury. I hope the ambulance ride was fun! :)

    Hi Noelle,

Good to see you there as well. I actually walked from The Fort all the way to where my car was parked (Greenbelt). The free trip to the finish line via that ambulance didn’t materialize *laughs* sayang nga experience din sana. Where you able to achieve your 2:20 target for the team you were pacing?

    See you soon.

Good decision Sam! There are days like this. You’ll come out stronger and faster the next time around. Rest, be well and be safe.

What, really? We saw an ambulance pass us along Lawton and assumed you’d been picked up. Well, that sucks!

Heritage Park took a toll on Rico. Timmy’s ITBS flared up. Of all of us only Sid finished before 2:20. But it was a good learning experience for all. :)

Tough news man. I hope it’s nothing serious and you get back to hundred percent soon. Magpi-pacer ka sa Mizuno? Boo! Does that mean we won’t race then? =)

    Jet,

Agree, why push when you’re already injured dba? I have no idea what would be the repercussion if I let me ego ran wild and ran/walked the entire route. I didn’t expect I would dnf in this kind of race though..
