Yeah you’ll not see me in the race results. I unintentionally ended up running as bandit. I started running about 20 meters from start line and end in the same spot, finished the race in 1:21:04, I just treated it as a tempo run. Thank God I’m back.
If you’re one of those guys who heard Rudy Biscocho regarding a new timing system being tested by elite atheletes last Sunday, its called the Bib Tag Timing system. Basically, it includes a disposable timing bib number. As runners cross the finish line, a chip in the bib number will record their time. Unlike Champion chip where you have to attach the timing device on your shoes (and remove it aftewards), the bib is the timing device! According to sir Rudy, it was imported from the Netherlands and it was being tested last Sunday by the account manager of MyLaps, the manufacturer. They ordered three systems for use in future events. Hopefully it should be fully operational by June. Basically, the system uses chips that are directly attached to the bib no. It has high accuracy detection and eliminates a lot of post race handling by organizers.
This kind of system will be used in the Boston Marathon as well.
I just hope this will be as good as Champion chip but not as expensive. If Rudy can introduce this to all his running events and still charge below php500 (I’m actually will be happier if less than php300), this will be a good development in our running community.

I was deeply disappointed though because the 10k start time in their race kit said 6:30am but the gun went off at 6am. When I got to the starting line, nobody was there already. I actually beat my ‘09 time by 3 minutes (according to my Garmin) but I’m sure my official time was much, much slower.

does the bib tag system also consider when a runner crosses the start line? if not, then the chip time of timing chips would still yield more accurate results. it would only be accurate for those who start way out front.

Not really the sales guy for Bib Tab system*laughs* but its common sense to assume that it should consider that factor otherwise this system is next to useless

re-read your post above and saw that the bib tag system was only tested for the elite athletes who ran at mizuno.
any feedback from testers who had garmin or other timing devices to compare it with?

Rick,
No I dont have feedback coz I didn’t bother to ask them for comparison. I ran this race as a bandit (albeit unintentionally), couldn’t care less about the distance.

I’ve got no complaints my personal time (based on my no-need-to-be-high-tech watch) and that of Mizuno was almost the same.
Are you talking about the complain about 1:53:44 and 1:53:26? That’s only 18 seconds difference. Pressed few seconds off, after you hear the gun start and a few more seconds off, after you cross the finish line????
Bib time like that used my mizuno and gun-start time used by chipped races should be the same. That’s what matter’s anywayz when ranking the runners….Mizuno should thank me for defending their race here.
In fairness. The chips were really great, especially when you see your run analysis. Join the next runrio race to check the chips out… wow, all out promotion here.
