It Happens

TAGS: None

I almost forgot to update this blog. Well, a series of unfortunate events did it. After that Run To Read race, I simply got bored of running. I promised myself to use that race to break my old PR for 10km (52 minutes), instead I got 1h:04m:32s (according to my watch). Chasing after a PR after all is tiring, and when you don’t achieve it, you get frustrated. Thats what hit me. I walked a lot in that race (probably more than a kilometer!), because I went too fast on the first three kilometers and lost steam on the remaining distance. The race I joined 2 weeks before this race was even better at 54 minutes! So at the end of the day, I thought running with JUST the primary aim of breaking a PR can be pointless. But then I realize, life is a challenge. Life becomes an exciting journey when you have a goal. Doing ways to achieve that goal, is exciting too and when you do achieve your goal, damn that would be sweet!

And so I’m back in training mode. My grand goal for this year is a sub 4 at QC International Marathon. I used to have this goal last year to achieve sub 2 for 21km and my mantra was “Break sub 2 or just die.” Funny because after I shouted that out on my blog, I was able to achieve my sub 2. And so I’m now bringing that mantra back. Sub 4 hours for 42km or just die!! In case you’re interested to know what is my training plan, try this one from Runner’s World.

I did plan to join that 70km ultramarathon (ilocos) organized by sir BR. However, the date fell on the day of my wife’s mom birth day. Me being a good son-in-law (and in my effort to impress my mother in law), I said yes to my wife for the invitation from her mom (because I did miss last year’s bday because of…a running event I joined  :-) ). My wife’s mom is already 72 years old, but her memory is sharper than any two-edged sword. So when she texted me I need to be there, I told myself I MUST be there.

On our way to her mom’s place (Lian, Batangas), a delivery van of a junk food company hit the back of our car near Tagaytay crossing. The impact was not that strong, we were not hurt, but the car’s tail light was destroyed, compartment’s cover was raised an inch from it original position and muffler was slightly misaligned.

I got out of the car, went after the driver and punched him straight in the face. Joke lang po. I confronted the driver and he told me what happened. He was trying to overtake a tricycle (but failed). As he saw my car, he pressed his brakes but probably due to faulty brakes, hit my car instead. He was apologetic and so I was able to keep my cool. Minutes later, Tagaytay police came. The police needed no explanation; he just looked at the damage and immediately asked who the driver of the delivery van.

At the end of the story, we went to the police station for the police report (which we need to submit to the car insurance company). It was my first time to visit a police station ( for realz!) and so I was walking slowly towards their station trying to enjoy every seconds of it. The police who was suppose to do the police report…was updating his facebook status and at one point, was composing a letter as well. After 30 minutes, he finally began writing the report, in English hah! After asking us to check his report ( where I even have to point out to him that “to” is always followed by the base form of the verb), we finally got our copy of police report.

With a busted tail light, we still went to my mother-in-law’s birthday. So what lesson we can derive from here? You can be a smart driver, but that will not shield you away from vehicular accidents. And as police parting words to me that day “shit happens”.
