If you’re a cheapskate like me and you would like to score free race kit on road races, try the following scheme:
1. Start a Blog
Yup, be a blogger. A runner-blogger to be more specific. And if you should blog, try to make sense from your blog and not just post a bunch of race ads and running related products whose aim is to sell something and nothing more ( I see a few of them actually
)
2. Make friends with people
From your blog, you will eventually meet a lot of people, runners,non-runners,race organizers, coaches etc. This will open pandora’s box and it’s up to you how to make use of your connections. I see some runners eventually starting to make money (from other runners) from organizing races, starting magazines, coaching etc. This is good, as it keeps the economy running…and puts money on people’s pockets. Meeting other runners also helps you to be more motivated in your efforts. I remember joining a bunch of people from takbo.ph for that Biggest Loser contest (first edition) where I won 3rd place (133lbs) and together with all other runners, we all lose an average of more than 10lbs. If my memory served me right, I lose 19 lbs in 2 months. Don’t ask me what’s my weight now. Clue: 152lbs
Now that you are familiar with a couple of your readers, majority of them will end up as your running buddy on road races, LSD partners followed by 2 bottles..you know what I’m talking. Some will become your close friend, and I know some end up as lovers as well.(hehehehe!) Halimbawa si ano…..
Ok here’s the tip now, based from my own experience mga pare.
You want to join an upcoming race, but you’re too bored to go to registration sites (but most probably you’re really a cheapskate and you don’t want to pay) but you want to run it legally (no bandit pls!). So start asking people for other runners who may not be able to run. Do this a week before the race. MOST probably, there will be ALWAYS be runners who will not be able to attend that race. This is the opportunity, look for these people. They will sell their race kits at cheaper price, and some nice people will even give it to you for free! Oks dba?
I will run a 16km on Sunday (FS Run at the Fort). This will be my come-back race (God how many come back races I have this year!). My training plan calls for a 9 miles (14.4km) long easy run at 10.04/mile (6:30/km) pace, but there’s no harm if I add a few kilometers. So kitakits on Sunday!
By the way, thanks and belated happy bday to Van Camanong for the free race kit! I was thinking of you while doing this blog post. Hehehehe!
ps: to help me with my 6:30 pace, i’ll be bringing along a metronome that will beep 95 times per minute. From my practice with metronome, it will give me a 6:25-6:35 pace. Variation is due to changes in stride length (e.g runners tend to decrease their stride as the race go by). So if you happen to see me and you want a 6:30 avg pace, you can join me but expect some beep beep from metronome ok? I apologize in advance.
