Its been a while I last joined a 32km race. The last time was last year, which I DNF’ed, ironically it was a Unilab race if my memory served me right.

This was supposed to be a come-back long distance race mode. Checking my best time for 32km (3h:06m) at Rizal Day run 2 yrs ago, I thought I could easily do a sub 3 hours. Here’s my recollection of that dreaded day:

- race started at exactly 4:30am
- I can’t believe I was 300 meters away from the starting line. Judging from the volume of runners that day for 32km (more than 2k!), I knew I was at the wrong place. I knew it would take more than 3 kilometers before I could run my race pace.
- It was a slow start as I have to run and overtake slow runners for more than 3 kilometers. I blaimed myself, I should have positioned myself near the starting area
- I reached the U-turn in Makati at exactly 1 hour. I was so off but my pace is just fine.
- I reached 25thKm in 2:40 minutes..good bye PR.
- Last 3 km was unbearable for me. I started to feel sleepy, hungry and the freaking heat was annoying me.
- Those friends/runners I overtake later, they started overtaking me.
- I finished the race in 03:43:39. Its a pretty embarassing finish time for me. I set my standards and expections too high. It was sub 3 hours or fart. Lesson learned: If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is compromise.
- I resigned to the fact that I suck in this race because I lack sleep, I didn’t take my breakfast and no heat training. Makes me think that the Condura 2012 42km race that will start @12am will be a PR and marathon newbie friendly. I knew it! The Concepcion brothers wanted marathon runners to achieve PR in their events so they will remember it as one of their best. Galing!
- And also because the Skyway rent is much cheaper if race starts at 12am.
- Hehehehehe!

So I did good in this race while I suck in this race. Back to the drawing board…

Titanium Runner to Me: Sam see you on Sunday ah!
Me: hhmmm…ano meron sa Sunday?
Titanium Runner: 500 Smile Run!
Me: aahhhhh

If it was not for Blas reminding me of this race, I would have slept over it. I was originally given a 10km race kit for this one but later on shifted to 16km, with the aim of nailing a PR on this category as its been a while I ran a 16km race, heck I can’t even remember what was the last 16km race I joined. I’m not really a PR conscious guy, I just want to check if I’m improving or my running is starting to suck. With a relatively flat route and rainy morning that day, a sub 1h:30m finish should be achievable. So I met Beep Beep of Team Reebok to get my 16km and off we started the race around 5:45am. It was a late start, the race should have started around 5am but due to a vehicular accident in Buendia flyover, we were told it need to start later to clear the area.

We heard the announcer doing the usual count-down, and as the race finally started I ran slowly to make sure my form/stride is ok. I saw Beep Beep blazing off in the earlier part of the race and my plan was to catch up with him. Slowly I warmed up after 2 kilometers and with the 5:30ish pace, I started to overtake a couple of runners. Noelle who ran 10km would catch up with me near the 2nd flyover and I used that as a cue to increase my pace. As the route was simply a loop around Roxas bldv, I was always on the look up for 16km runners on their way to the Start area just to check my possible placement at the end of the race. I saw Beep Beep on 3rd place near the Coastal Mall U-turn, just 1km away from me and didn’t notice anyone. I knew I was on the fourth place then and it dawned upon me that for the first time, I might end up in top 10 for this race, the idea of announcer calling my name on the stage was very exciting. My mind was seducing me to run faster, and run all out on the last 3km.

On my way back to the starting line, however I was surprised a couple of runners whom I’ve overtake was all ahead of me! I knew they wouldn’t cheat for this race and I was already under the impression that the marshal made them do a quick U-turn instead. As my dream of achieving top 10 for that race crumbled, I still maintained my pace and later saw Doc Maya and Ultramarathoner Mar together, just almost 300 meters from me. They unknowingly made the first U-turn because the marshall told them so, while some of us ran all the way near the Costal Mall U-turn. Mar was especially running a very strong and consistent pace, and I made him my target*laughs*. I was finally able to overtake him I believe on the last 3 km on the race, but I knew he was just behind me as I could hear his feet’s slapping sounds against the pavement. The last km saw me running faster and I reached the Finish area with a time of 1h:31m.

I heard somebody that those who ran all the way to the last U-turn actually ran more than 18km+. And those who did the 1st U-turn were right after all. Whatever the distance was, I believe its better than kulang. With the free race kit I got, I was not really in a position to cry out loud hahahaha. I’m thankful I was able to finish the race, minus electrolyte capsules which I always carry and minus the Spenco middle sole. I like to believe that somehow, I did improve and it was enough for me. I want to congratulate Ian Alacar/Jay Em of Without Limits, it was a successful, worthy race and we made a couple of kids smile that day. I hope there would be more ‘run for a cause’ races in the future.

As I waited for a couple of minutes more to hear the awarding of top 10 finishers for 16km, I heard something that went like this:

Announcer: and the 9th place goes to Sammy Delena..of Team Diadora.

Ayos ba?

Thirteen years ago, I went to a mission in Aurora province together with a bunch of churchmates. We did distribute Bibles and gave free dental checkups and foods as well. Thirteen years have passed but the colors are still very vivid, the warmth of the people as they invited us to come to their homes were encouraging, kids playing with us and the camaderie between our teams. However, there was one particular incident that I will never forget. I met a kid, I believe she was only 4 yrs old that time and she had a cleft lip. As her friends were playing with us, there she was, alone, lonely staring at us. I asked her whats wrong with her, and she was telling me something, but I couldn’t understand her at all. That time we only had 2 dentist and I knew they don’t have the expertise nor the necessary tools to treat her. We left the place after a week but the thought of her continued to linger on my mind. I wish I could do something, but heck I was just in college and I don’t have the means to help her, but I promise myself that someday I hope to help kids like her.

Fast forward 13 years later, Blas invited me to join 500 Smile Run blogger press and all the memories of that little girl came back.

So runners, I won’t continue my drama anymore. Make use of your money wisely. Instead of being a willing marketing agent of companies/race organizers, why not make use of your money to help somebody smile. Your money will be used to treat kids with cleft lip, cleft palate and other childhood facial deformities. We were told during the presscon that it takes php15,000 to treat a child with cleft lip. I really hope this race could race a lot of money to treat more kids. So there you go, smile and run!

I’m going to give a 10km race kit to anyone who can first reply here. Unahan na!

So my so called return to ultramarathon failed miserably. Although my legs were still kicking strong, the sun’s heat destroyed me. Several things I’ve learned from that race:

First. I will never be comfortable with that gigantic hydration bag (a 2Liter Camelback) bouncing off my back. As I ran I noticed that it caused some friction on the lower section of my back neck, hence the annoying heat I felt whenever I run. Good thing I carried my petroleum jelly, I didnt suffer any chaffing on that area. I might purchase a smaller one, probably a 1Liter local brand, I saw one at Mall of Asia (forgot the brand)

Second. The run walk strategy is a cool idea, but it didn’t work on me. I had extreme difficulty transitioning back from walking to running and this affected my pace. I’ve found my running phase got slower everytime after a minute of walk.

Third. When opportunity knocks, I will try to dose myself with cold water. I only did this on my face but never on my head and upperbody as I’m always wary of too much water ending up on my shoes.

So here’s my strategy on Saturday. I will not bring my hydration bag anymore, instead I might just opt for a handheld bottle filled with plain water. I tried this already on last year’s BDM 102km, so I know I can handle it just well. Fortunately, my ultra team (Team Ungas) have 2 support vans that will help us along the route. This will also help solve problem #3 from above. Whenever I feel hotter than usual, I will just look after the van and ask for a cold soaked sponge. Oh dba pwede? Now what about problem #2. I will not entirely ditch the run-walk strategy ( I will walk all uphills), but, I will add some “speed ups”. This will not only destroy the monotony of run-walk , but hopefully it will also help my leg muscles feel loose and more free. This will also enable me to access several muscles in my leg instead of utilizing just a few ones from all that walks/slow runs resulting in fatigue. My speed ups will consist of 50-100 meter run at 5:30min-6min/km pace or a 1 minute of same pace, depende sa mood ko. I plan to do more speed-ups than walk if possible. I’ve seen some ultramarathoners do this stuff, so its time for me to put this in practice and see how it will go.

I will use Diadora Mythos Samurai III as my shoes as it is very light and will ward of any excess water/sweat from my feet. This race will also mark the first time for me to use this Spenco insole to provide support to my arch and provide comfort to my heel. Yes, I used to suffer from heel spur so I’m taking extra measures to avoid it.

Again this is just an experiment I will do for this race, and FYI, I will just consider this as part of my training for the ultimate ultramarathon race next year- The Bataan Death March 160km Ultramarathon Race.

So any ultra people there reading? Have you tried adding “speed-ups” in your race? What’s the result? I’m dying to know!

I was given a new pair of shoes and guess what’s the name? Mythos Samurai III! – the running ninja’s new weapon.

It comes from an Italian brand Diadora, more popular to us Filipinos thru their line of soccer shoes. The Diadora Mythos Samurai 3 belongs to the light range of the Italian brand in terms of running shoes and can fit into the combination and range of shoes designed for racing.

The weight of the shoe is at 270 grams (9.5 ounce) making it an ideal shoes for training and racing. I’ve already tried them during my tempo run and I can say its very light and responsive. Its got a good combination of flexibility and lightness, a good choice if you plan to compete in road races on medium-fast pace.

Recommended for the neutral runners seeking ultra-light weight, flexibility, and cushioning. The shoes responsiveness, cushioning and lightweight so far seems a good compromise and above all you can find it discounted in some retail store like at The Shoe Shop -Powerplant Mall (30%) and Royal Sporting House – Festival Mall , Alabang Town Center, Alimall, Marquee Mall, Recto, Pampanga, Lipa and Cebu.

I have owned several brands and types of running shoes including Nike, ADIDAS, New Balance, and Asics. None of them have felt as light or as good on my feet during training runs as these. I’ll admit I was skeptical when I got them since I have never owned Diadora running shoes. I am familiar with their soccer shoes and now I can say their running shoes are great. You will not be disappointed.

Sat 12pm

I got home around lunch time and the wife was surprised why I got home early. She knew that I’ll be running my first trail run- 57km (that started 5am-ish that day) at that and she expected me to arrive past 5pm. I told her that I didn’t finish the entire run, that I only got as far as the first loop (the route requires to finish 2 loops for 57km total) and the reason why I didn’t finish the race was because I lack heat training, the race was too hot and sun’s killing me. It was raining cats and dogs outside the house and I wasn’t really sure if I was able to convince her of my alibi.

Rewind 10 hours earlier

I picked up Xerxis (ultra team mate from Team Ungas) around 3am and the plan was to pass through Carmona Exit to reach Sta.Rosa Laguna. The road from GMA to Carmona exit was treacherous, several uphill that you could not see the next incoming vehicle and the downhill roads you have to be very careful with, there we no lights along the road, several sharp turns in the road with no necessary warning signals, I was wondering if the local government of Carmona were a bunch of monkeys that didn’t pay attention to road safety(much apologies to real monkeys). To make things more complicated, it was raining that day that I thought I’d rather run another 102km than drive along those roads.

Xerxis was hoping that it wouldn’t be too hot during the course, I could only agree with him by nodding my head and not say anything as I was more concentrated driving on that hell road while muttering in my head biblical passage Psalm 23 with slight innovation…”even though I drive through the road of shadow and death, because you are with me, I fear no harm.” We reached Nuvali club house around 4am where the rest of the 25 and 50km runners were already gathered.

It was a familiar sight of fellow ultra runners. It looks like they were all prepared for the battle, some were preparing their hydration and foods, some were doing Kodak moments, a lot of chit chats going on with familiar faces, it was a sight to behold. Mr. Jonel of Front Runner magazine was so busy, announcing every 10minutes to sign their names in the list pasted on the table there. As I signed my name on the list, I checked the paper and noticed that there were around 200+ doing 57km. I was 70th in the list. Beside the list is some sort of disclaimer. Just like EULA when installing a software, I bet my ass only few or no one reads it at all. I believe ultra-marathoners are more responsible, more battle tested and more serious in races like this, that if they screwed up, they only have to blame themselves and not the race people. Having said that, I believe its everyone’s responsibility to read it. Did I read the disclaimer? No…je je je je je!

the route

As it was my first time to run a trail run, I was surprised with the route. We mostly run on dirt road. I’m glad I wore my CWX tights to protect my legs from sharp leaves. There was even a surprise there when we cross a smaller part of a river. We didn’t really submerged our feet on it as there were some huge rocks we could step on to keep our shoes dry (as if that still matters). The hydration station were spaced to far from each other like 5-6km. Not that I blame the organizers, we knew that before hand that was why we were told to bring our own hydration. I got with me a 2liter Camelbak (I only fill around 1.5liter of it) on my back, damn it was heavy as I ran. Blas would comment how huge my backpack was and I believe I possessed one of the biggest bag that day for the run.

I honestly didn’t have any problem with my pace, I was able to run comfortably and applied Galloway technique on the last 10km of the first loop. However around 7:30am, it already unbelievably hot. I have to convince myself there will be lots of shades to hide from the sun and everything will be fine. Solid intakes and hydration were perfectly fine as I was able to find a way to figure out how to drink and eat based on current fitness level and unbelievable higher sweat rate. I carried with me Hammer brand Electrolyte and anti-fatigue capsules with me. Being well prepared on all aspects of hydration and my faith that my legs are prepared to handle the gruesome task of the race, I actually planned to finish the race by lunch time or 1pm but not exceeding 2pm. But then, there was one thing I wasn’t able to prepare….

the sun

If there’s one thing I wish sir Jonel prepared that day, it was I wish there were ice-soaked sponge to help cool our body. But then, I can only blame myself. I train in the gym kse, 4 days a week at that. You can ask Totoy, my gym buddy. While the legs were prepared for the hills and I have the necessary endurance to finish the race, I was pampered in the air-conditioned gym. I felt like a salt-fish thrown into fresh water environment (ok that was a bad analogy), my body ache from each direct contact with the sun.

the end

As I was approaching near the end of first loop, I met fellow ultra runners Ronnie and another runner I could not recognized. He jokingly told us, “uy 2 km na lang, another 28km pa for the next loop!” something to that effect, I calmly accepted the fact that I will not do the next loop. Seeing Nuvali clubhouse around 500 meters from me, instead of turning left for a short 1km or something to reach the place, I went instead straight to the parking lot with the intention of going inside my car, turning on the engine and turning on full blast the car-aircon! I proceed to call sir Jonel(the organizer) and informed him that I won’t do the 2nd loop that I was not prepared for the heat. I think it was the lousiest excuse he ever heard that day but was real, honest thing I could say. I do not have any blisters, my legs can still run, upper body still strong even if I was carrying a huge bag and no other issues whatsoever. He told me to do a short-cut and proceed to the club-house.

the clubhouse

I approached Mr. Jonel, I thought I would received some sort of verbal abuse for DNFing his race with the lousiest excuse of all time but he did not. Siyempre mabait yan eh! I repeated him my case that the heat is starting to take its toll on me and I was not prepared at all for it. He was just happy and told me its OK, there’s always next time. I spent a couple of time in the club-house and even managed to have free massage from Salonpas and bought that buy1-take1 Nature Valley bar.

closing time

I didn’t go home with a defeated-emo type of emotion. In fact, parang bisyo na tong DNF na ginagawa ko. I believe this is the 3rd time I DNF and the first one this year. As I drive on my way back, passing through the same treacherous Carmona road, I noticed a tow truck pulling an L300. I knew it! A van fell off the ravine! The windshield was broken with some blood on it. I hope nothing very serious and life threatening happened to the people inside that van.

Such incident made us realize how precious life is. You might feel broken or beaten down, but you know there’s always another chance to hold and fight. As for me, I may went home not victorious, but I know there will be another trail run (and I will run this race again!) to prove myself…and I’m glad I’m alive to still do continue this fight.

Greentenial Race. I joined this race not because I am alumni of La Salle. Yeah I made the Brothers very happy for spending 7 years under their educational system (undergrad and graduate) but really, the sole reason why I joined this race is because..its libre pare! I honestly thought the race organizer is practically giving race kits away as I’ve been getting offers for free race kits from several friends/team mates*laughs*.

I woke up around 3am, too excited kse. It was a familiar feeling, waking up early, prepping up the stuffs I need, checking my shoes, clothes to wear etc. I was out by 3:30 am and was able to find a very convenient parking area just few meters from the starting line. As I’ve been training the past few weeks with gel-based orthotic on my shoes to deal with my heel spur, I used it as well for this road race, although this would be the very first time I would be using it on a race. I met Blas who gave me my race kit, met fellow Powerpuff Boys and greeted some friends. The race started at exactly 5:am after some stretching exercise by Argo (who also gained weight).

I run comfortably for the first 5km with an avg pace of 6-6:15min/km. However I have to slow down from time to time as I felt my orthotic insert moves sideways. It was a pretty annoying experience as I knew it would be just a matter of time I will have to take off my shoes, re-adjust the thing and continue my run. On the 8th km, I saw my inserts protruding from my ankle area. I have to stop, remove my shoes, re-adjust the thing and move on. This happened several times on both feet. You know the feeling, its so hard to continue a constant pace if something stops you from doing so. By 15th km, I have had enough of it I removed both my inserts and hold it on my hands while running. As I don’t want to risk again my injury, I slowed down considerably for fear I might re-ignite my injury. I’m fortunate that even if I was running without my inserts, I don’t feel any pain. Somehow, I’m thinking if buying custom-made orthotic is more practical. I finished the race in 2:21min(unofficial), too far from my 1:56 PR but still glad I’ve made it without any serious issues.

After the race, I stayed around with Powerpuff boys for some post race ceremonies and games. It was something I’ve never done before, as I usually left the race place practically right after I cross the finish line. I just soaked myself in this race atmosphere. Seeing other people crossed the finish line, seeing people have photo-ops with other people, seeing friends running again…it was really a blessing that we were all given an opportunity to run today. I will be chasing Half Mary again next month and I promised that this time, I will do better than before.

I just hope to find a new shoes that will have the best cushion with plantar support so that I don’t have to buy orthotic (by the way, it also cost almost same as a running shoes!). I wonder what the running ninja’s next shoes (<del>weapon of choice</del>) will be….Nuninuninuninuni….

Tomorrow marks my return to extramarital affair with the road. Yeah, I’ll be running 21km at Greentennial Half Marathon tomorrow Sunday at MOA complex. Just to let you know, I’ve been running the past few weeks. Logging in an average of 30-40km/week with tempo run, interval run, simulated hill runs and resistance training in a gym. While I don’t expect a sub 2 hours for this race (my P.R for 21km is only 1:56), I just hope all my efforts will pay off. My aim for this is to test if I’m fully healed (heel spur), or its just my brain telling me I’m healed (hahaha may ganon??!!)

Hope to see you guys around tomorrow.

Thanks to Blas for the free race kit!

SMS conversation between Blas and Me:

Blas: hoy Sam umattend ka nman ng bloggers night ng Reebok!
Sam: I usually ignore blogger invites, but because its you, I will.
Blas: Ok kitakits
Sam: Cge

My dear friend Blas have been bugging me to update this blog every time we meet. I honestly feel he’s the only runner blogger that still anticipates updates on this blog (hahahahaha!) So when he invited me for this Reebok race where he’s one of the running ambassadors, I made a promise to him not to miss it. So I went to Paul Calvins hours ago where this bloggers night took place and I was…in shock and awe. I didnt know anyone. There were probably less than 10 runners-bloggers that I personally knew. Running Diva was there, the Bull Runner was there and so was Kulit Runner, Jet Paiso (gained weight),Rod Runner (gained weight),Titanium dude (gwapo pa din), Vicky(it gets very hot every time I’m near her..i dont know) , Bro running and wife and the rest, I have no idea who they are. Either way, it looks like the number of runner-bloggers are just increasing and I see this as a positive thing.

So in a nut-shell, Reebok with the help of Pepsquadevents have this run that includes running on a 5-level parking ramp of CVC Law Center. Its something I’ve never tried so this must be exciting. You can see the details here——-> http://zigtechrun.pepsquadevents.com

The host also mentioned about their Reebok shoes featuring the Zigtech technology. It looks cool and I hope I could try it one of these days. Here’s what the press kit says:

ZigTech technology reduces wear and tear in key leg muscles by up to 20% allowing you to train harder for longer. Simply put, it’s an energy drink for your feet.

Everything about Reebok’s ZigTech technology is designed to conserve and return energy to the athlete for a soft and springy ride. The one-of-a-kind ZigTech bottom unit features an innovative, lightweight foam that is engineered into a dramatic, geometric, zig-zag shape. This unique zig-shaped sole absorbs the impact of heel strike and sends a wave of energy along the length of the shoe propelling the athlete forward with each step.

On trying out the technology for himself Lewis Hamilton said, “The energy that I get from ZigTech is phenomenal. I’ve never known anything like it from a training shoe and now that I can train harder, faster and for longer, nothing and no one will be able to stop me, not even Thierry! It’s been great to meet him today, he’s a superstar and a nice guy, but that doesn’t mean that I’ll go easy on him when we’re up against each other.”

Thierry Henry agreed, “Lewis may be younger than me but with my new ZigTech shoes I’m backing myself in this race against him. I can’t lose. The trainers are perfect for me and my needs – they are bold and give me that extra boost to be able to perform at my very best.”

The team behind the technology is led by Bill McInnis, Reebok’s Head of Advanced Innovation who explained how the shoe works. Bill said, “Traditional energy return is focused only on the vertical impact of the heel strike. In contrast, ZigTech is designed to transfer energy horizontally along the zig-zags so the athlete gets that energy back in the forefoot.”

The lightweight, flexible bottom unit, combined with a minimalist upper and whisper-quiet ground contact also contribute to making ZigTech a new standard in running and training footwear. In fact, by wearing Reebok’s ZigTech footwear, training longer just got easier. The technology results in up to 20% less wear and tear on key leg muscles, especially the shins and hamstrings.

Henry knows just how important this benefit is, given the strain he puts on his legs during the football season. He said, “Wearing ZigTech give players a bounce, an energy that lets us train longer with less strain on key leg muscles, like shins. This ultimately enables athletes to stay healthier during the long season.”

Reebok’s ZigTech footwear collection is available for men and women in an array of bold, bright colours that will make you truly stand out in the gym and on the court, field or track.

Thierry Henry and Lewis Hamilton are just two of the superstar athletes across the globe who will be able to run and train in ZigTech footwear. Basketball icons Allen Iverson and Yao Ming, football star Ryan Giggs plus hundreds more athletes will be able to train harder and longer thanks to this innovative new technology from Reebok.

“Reebok has always been committed to innovation,” said Uli Becker, Reebok’s Global President. ”ZigTech is the latest example of how we continue to deliver products that reset the bar and move the fitness and training world forward in a new and exciting way.”

Reebok is locally distributed by RSH Marketing (Philippines), Inc. and is available at Reebok concept stores Megamall and Festival Mall, Eastwood, Trinoma, Royal Sporting House, The Shoe Shop and other leading dealers nationwide.
ZIGTECH APPAREL FACT
ZigTech apparel comes off the heels of Reebok’s popular ZigTech footwear, which was introduced in 2010.

ZigTech apparel utilizes Celliant™ fibers, which are woven into the apparel. Celliant fibers have been clinically proven to increase oxygen levels in the body on an average of 7%, giving athletes more energy for sport and life.

Celliant™ is a specially-formulated technical performance fiber that is knit or woven into fabrics. Products containing Celliant have been clinically proven to enhance oxygen levels in the body. Celliant fibers are created using a collection of optically responsive natural minerals that get infused into polyester fibers.

Reebok’s ZigTech apparel is versatile and durable. The apparel can be worn indoors and out, as Celliant fibers do not rely on the sun to be effective, but rather a combination of factors.

ZigTech apparel does not have to be next to the skin in order to work. The effectiveness is not diminished by covering or layering for cooler weather.

ZigTech apparel is a fiber technology so it cannot be washed out and will not wear out, and will last the life of the garment.

Reebok ZigTech apparel is available in jackets, pants, shorts and tech tops. Reebok’s ZigTech apparel collection includes the Premier running range and the ZigTech training range.

Available at Reebok Concept Stores: U/G Level SM Megamall, 2nd Level Festival Supermall, 2nd LevelTrinoma & 2nd Level Citywalk 2, Eastwood. Also available at: Royal Sporting House Ermita.
